이세득(1932~2001)은 한국 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 서정추상의 독자적 영역을 구축한 대표적인 화가입니다. 또한 한국 전통미술의 요소를 현대적인 회화 언어로 재해석하며, 한국 추상미술의 정체성과 미감을 한층 더 깊이 있게 확장해왔습니다.
함경남도 출신인 이세득은 일본제국미술학교에서 기초를 다진 뒤, 프랑스 아카데미 그랑쇼미에르에서 수학하며 유럽 현대미술을 체득했으며 특히 종군화가로서 한국전쟁의 참상을 기록한 경험은 그의 작품 세계에 현실성과 내면성을 동시에 각인시켰고, 이후 앵포르멜과 서정적 추상의 접목을 통해 독자적인 화풍을 확립했습니다.
이번 기획전에서는 이세득의 대표작 40여 점이 전시되며, 특히 ‘심상(心象)’ 연작을 통해 그의 내면적 정서와 화면 구성의 시적 리듬을 체험할 수 있고 작품들은 시대적 미감과 예술적 깊이를 담아, 한국 추상미술의 미학적 정수를 보여줍니다.
Lee Se‑deuk (1932–2001) was a leading figure in Korean contemporary art who established his own lyrical abstraction. Infusing traditional Korean art into a modern painterly language, he profoundly deepened the identity and aesthetic of Korean abstract painting.
Originally from Hamgyeongnam‑do, Lee laid his foundations at the Japanese Imperial Art School and later studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in France, immersing himself in European modernism. His experience as a war artist during the Korean War—documenting the war’s grim reality—left an indelible mark on both the realism and inner depth of his work. Thereafter, he forged a unique style by blending Art Informel with lyrical abstraction.
This curated exhibition features approximately 40 of his major works. Highlighted among them is the “Sim‑sang (Heart‑Imagery)” series, through which visitors can experience Lee’s inner emotions and the poetic rhythm of his compositions. These pieces embody the era’s visual sensibilities and artistic profundity, presenting the aesthetic essence of Korean abstract art.
